TSA cautions travelers about packing prohibited items

It's going to be a busy weekend at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport as travelers leave for summer vacations and Memorial Day weekend.

The TSA is asking people to do their research before they head to the airport.

It's important to know what you can, and cannot bring past the security checkpoint.

Over the past few days, the TSA has confiscated dozens of prohibited items at the airport.

The majority of the items they had to confiscate are allowed on planes, just not in carry-on bags. Things like guns, knives, and tools need to be packed in your checked bags.

A lot of people do not check bags. The TSA has created an app for travelers so they can find out whether a certain item needs to be checked or if it can be placed in carry-on bags.

If you want to travel with a firearm, there are certain procedures and packing requirements.

"A properly packed firearm declared to the airline in the proper carrying case, locked, and unloaded is allowed in checked baggage," said Nico Melendez with the TSA.

If you want to avoid traffic, Sky Harbor is reminding travelers to use the Sky Train on 44th Street and Washington.

You can avoid the busy terminal curbs, it has an early bag check, and kiosk to print your boarding passes.

The Sky Train is free to use; it takes five minutes to travel to terminal four, and seven minutes to terminal three.
