The victim was known as "Pastor Jack," a man who was dedicated to helping people turn their lives around. Tonight a community is mourning his loss and praying for the person who killed him.
"One of my favorite things to do is to help people get off the streets, get off of drugs, [and] get off of alcohol."
This is 53-year-old Jack Moriarty, featured in a Youtube video from 2013, talking about the Redeemed Outreach Center, which helps the homeless, sex offenders and prostitutes get back on their feet.
Those who knew him say he has helped countless people turn their lives around. Tonight night, many of them came together to mourn and pray for their beloved pastor.
Pastor Jack himself practiced what he preached.
"I'm feeling super, super," said Pastor Jack. "Big weight lifted off my shoulders. I've had these warrants for over two years, probation violations and I come down here today and I got reinstated and I can continue with my life and I don't have to look over my shoulder anymore."
In this interview from 2009, he talked about his criminal past and how he pledged to start anew. He spent the next several years getting back on his own feet and went on to inspire others to do the same.
"I don't know why someone would want to do this to such a mighty man of god," said Pastor Phil Garcia, a friend of Pastor Jack. "He was such a faithful servant and all he wanted to do was help people out."
Police say Pastor Jack and two others were at their home on 20th Avenue and Monroe Friday night when two men came in and robbed them. Pastor Jack was shot and killed, another man was attacked, and a woman hid and called police.
The suspects got away, but tonight investigators released this sketch of one of the men they're looking for. A second suspect is also being sought.
"I just pray they seek the lord after this," said Garcia.
The suspect is described as a white man in his forties, 5' 08", with a stocky build and stringy brown hair. The second suspect is described as a black man between 20 and 40-years-old, 5' 10", 170 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call phoenix police or silent witness.
