Update: Witness describes chaos caused when teen crashed car into vacant home

A west valley, special- needs teen is recovering in the hospital after taking his family's van on a joy ride through a neighbor's yards. Today, we're hearing from one neighbor who saw the path of destruction left behind.

"I heard a really loud noise and then I looked out the window and I saw a car going by extremely fast."

Carla Meade was working on homework when the commotion started in her neighborhood on 51st Avenue and Dobbins in Laveen. Police say a 16-year-old became angry with his family and decided to take the family van for a joy ride.

"I know he lives in the neighborhood," says Meade. "I haven't actually seen him driving around."

The teen was able to drive straight through several neighbors' brick walls and gates. The erratic and chaotic scene finally came to an end after colliding with the pillar support of a garage at a home down the street.

"Then I heard a huge crash, that's when we went outside and we saw the commotion out here of the vehicle out here in front of the house," says Meade.

Despite the van being lodged through the side of the garage, the teen was somehow able to get himself out of the vehicle.

"After he hit this house he was pacing around for a little bit," says Meade. "Then he walked over to the other accident that he caused."

No one was hurt inside that home. Phoenix Fire officials say the 16-year-old will be getting various evaluations from doctors. He was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.

"He had a cast on his wrist and then his face was bleeding," Meade says.

Authorities say the teen caused several thousand dollars' worth of damage. No word on any charges he could be facing. Officers are still conducting an investigation.
