Alabama deputy shot during hostage situation

- An Alabama sheriff's deputy was shot while responding to a report of a hostage situation at a Randolph County home.

Alabama state investigators said the incident started around noon when deputies were called out to a home off County Road 7. Investigators believe a man was holding his wife inside a home. The situation escalated after the man, whose name has not yet been released, opened fire, striking one of the deputies.

The Randolph County deputy was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He was listed in stable condition late Saturday night and is expected to be OK.

After a standoff, which lasted several hours, special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the man shot himself. The woman being held hostage was taken from the home. She did not suffer any major injuries.

AL.com reported the suspect killed his son's dog and started a fire at another location in Randolph County.

Several specialized law enforcement teams from both state and surrounding local areas were brought in to assist in the situation.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
