Boy Scouts to allow gay scout leaders

The Boy Scouts of America says they are allowing gay men to be scout leaders.

The change will formally be announced and ratified Monday evening, but for some people it's a difficult thing to talk about.

FOX 10 spent the day trying to get people involved in scouting to talk about having gay scout leaders. Outside the scout shop in Mesa, one man wrestled with the issue.

What did Evan think of having a gay scout leader?

"I don't know, I have to research it, see what is going on," said Evan.

What concerns would he have?

"I don't know, I have a lot of other concerns, but I am not sure what's going on," said Evan.

Nobody from the Boy Scouts of America would go on camera to talk about the change. The national headquarters in Dallas issued a statement saying "The resolution will allow gay people to be scout leaders... this change would also respect the right of religious chartered organizations to continue to choose adult leaders whose beliefs are consistent with their own."

It would allow them to keep gay people out of those roles in the organization.

"I think what happened today was a really important step, but a baby step, in that there are still a lot of people who can be discriminated against in the Boy Scout's organization based on who they are," said Catherine Alonzo with Equality Arizona.

So who is against this?

The Mormon and Catholic Church. FOX 10 reached out to both churches, but neither one replied.
