City of Chester agrees to rename park for boy who died after saving sister from car

Chester, SC - The City of Chester agreed unanimously Monday night to rename the Brooklyn Park in honor of an 11-year-old boy who died after pushing his sister out of the path of an oncoming car.

A petition has been going around for over two weeks to change the name of the park to "La'Darious Wylie Park of Brooklyn."

Michale Halsey, a neighbor of La'Darious and a member of the non-profit group Joshua Lodge 1015 spearheaded the petition. On behalf of the family he thanked all who signed the petition.

Wylie was hit and killed by a car at his bust stop on Tuesday, October 27, in Chester. His mother told local media that La'Darious pushed his young sister, Sha'Vonta out of the way of the car before it hit him, killing him a day later.

La'Darious died in the hospital the day after he was hit. His mother said she donated his organs so other children might survive injuries or illness.

Michelle Johnson, 57, was charged with felony hit and run resulting in death, which carries up to 25 years in prison. Johnson posted a $25,000 bond Friday, and did not explain her actions in court.

A funeral was held for La'Darious Thursday afternoon, November 5.
