AURORA, Colorado - A toddler's hearing was restored thanks to modern science. A new type of cochlear implant made it possible for a child to hear his parents' voices again.
Nathan lost his hear at just a few months old.
Immediately his parents, Eric and Jami Fries, took the challenge head-on and wound up at the University of Colorado hospital.
Just a few weeks ago, Nathan had the cochlear implant surgically installed by doctors.
It is a newer, thinner implant than those used in the past on other patients, an ideal size for an infant.
Doctors say there are some risks involved but that a small percentage of people with hearing loss may benefit from surgery to receive a cochlear implant.
