Fannin County school board votes to allow staff to carry guns

It is common for schools in Georgia to have uniformed gun-toting officers patrolling the hallways and grounds. It would be a radical step to allow general school personnel to have weapons during the school day.

School board members in Fannin County faced that vote on whether or not faculty members could start carrying weapons during the school day. The board voted in favor of the measure, but stipulated they need to be in the hands of trained teachers and staff.

Some school officials support the potential approval while others are not in favor of it.

Fannin County school leaders said that for someone to be considered a qualified staff member, they have to undergo training unless they have a military or law enforcement background.

There are five schools in the Fannin County School District. Each has their own school resource officer.
