Worker pulled from 6-foot collapsed trench in Rome

- Rescue crews spent about three hours to pull a trapped water and sewer worker from a collapsed trench in Floyd County Tuesday afternoon.

That’s according to WRGA Rome's NewsTalk who also reports the rescue started around 1 p.m. It happened in the 2900 block of Shorter Avenue.

The radio station reports about 75 fire and rescue personnel were at the scene working to get 25-year-old Shawn Michel Marie, a two-year veteran with the Rome Water Department, from the collapsed trench. Crews brought and a device to suction out water from the trench.

Crews have also lowered oxygen tanks into the 6-foot deep hole to the trapped worker.

Rescue crews believe the ditch collapsed after an 18-wheeler rolled by the scene.
