High-speed pursuit of stolen car ends in fatal gunfire, arrest

Authorities on Tuesday chased a car that was reported stolen in Long Beach, shot to death one of the two 20-year-old inside and arrested the other one in an incident that mostly unfolded on live TV.

The chase began about 6:10 a.m. and went over surface streets and then onto the Long Beach (710), Artesia (91), Glenn Anderson (105) and San Gabriel River (605) freeways.

The driver, identified by the Long Beach Police Department, as Juan Manuel Avilla, of Paramount, ran red lights and sped around cars, nearly overturning at one point.

The chase led to Bellflower, where the car went into a business parking lot at Foster Road and Bellflower Boulevard and was boxed in by police about 6:40 a.m.

Shots were then fired by law enforcement officers, and the passenger, identified as David Anthony Luera, 20, of Paramount, got out and surrendered.

A short time later, officers pulled Avilla, who was injured, from the car and began administering CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Luera is being held on $35,000 bail according to LBPD. Police are seeking to charge him as an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
