Hospital cleared of wrongdoing in case of baby Yovanny Lopez

Advocate Christ Medical Center was cleared Monday in a state investigation over potential wrongdoing in the case of baby Yovanny Lopez, who was cut from his mother's womb April 23rd.

The baby died Friday after being on life support for over a month.

The hospital came under fire for its handling of the baby after Clarisa Figueroa claimed to have given birth to the boy despite doctors who examined her finding "no signs consistent with a woman who had just delivered a baby."

Christ Medical Center released the following statement Tuesday morning:

"Our hearts and prayers continue to be with the Ochoa-Lopez family, whose courage and grace have drawn the admiration of our entire organization. We thank the Illinois Department of Public Health for its thorough review, and CMS for its assessment, which showed the medical care provided and actions taken by our staff were appropriate. Nevertheless, we are committed to learning from the experience to improve processes. Additionally, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated team for their tireless commitment to delivering world-class, compassionate care."

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner's office Saturday said Yovanny Lopez died of "complications of anoxic encephalopathy, intrauterine hypoxia and maternal assault and demise." His death was ruled a homicide.

A private funeral will be held for the family, according to a Lopez family spokeswoman.
