Thieves broke into several cars near a hotel in downtown Atlanta early Monday morning, police said. The cars' owners were staying at the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Peachtree Street, but the hotel's valet staff parks guests' cars in a nearby deck.
Atlanta Police confirmed to FOX 5 at least eight car break-ins and an auto theft were reported at the deck beginning at 3 a.m. Monday. Thieves stole everything from gift cards and GPS systems to clothes and laptops, according to police reports.
Jon-Luke Cannada spoke with FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell Tuesday. He said thieves stole his mother's car from the deck after he left an extra set of keys in the console. Officers later found the car. But Cannada must travel back to Atlanta from Dublin, Ga. to recover it.
"It was traumatic and shocking," Cannada said. "The cop was there all day writing reports for all the guests. There was a lot of negativity that day."
FOX 5 reached out to the hotel's manager on duty as well as the parking deck's owner Tuesday evening, but did not receive an immediate response. A sign inside the parking deck notifies warns drivers to hide valuables. It also tells them that the parking deck company is not responsible for damage or thefts.
