New Galaxy Note 7 software update will "prevent devices from charging"

Officials with Samsung announced Friday it will roll out a new update its Galaxy Note 7 devices in the U.S. that will reportedly prevent the phone from charging.

A voluntary recall of the phone was announced in October, after it was discovered that the device could overheat, and pose a safety risk to customers.

According to a statement posted on Samsung's website, the company will release the software update, starting on December 19. According to the statement, the update "will prevent U.S. Galaxy Note 7 devices from charging and will eliminate their ability to work as mobile devices."

In the same statement, officials with Samsung noted that they have had" overwhelming participation" in the Note 7 refund and exchange program in the U.S., with more than 93% of all recalled devices returned.

Verizon Wireless has announced, in an official statement, that it will not push the software update. According to the statement, the company is not pushing the update, because of the added risk the update could pose to users that do not have another device to switch to.

According to the statement released by Verizon Wireless, a "vast majority" of their customers who purchased the Note 7 have replaced their phones with other models.
