Authorities are investigating after they say an unarmed man was fatally shot by Dearborn Police.

Dearborn Police say an officer shot the man during a chase in the eight thousand block of Whitcomb Avenue, which is near Tireman Avenue and Greenfield Road.

The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Kevin Matthews.

The officer recognized the man as a "troublesome criminal" who was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant out of Redford. The officer got out of his car and began to chase the man. They crossed the street and entered the City of Detroit.

Dearborn police say the officer and Matthews got in a scuffle over the officer's gun and that's when the officer fired a shot, which killed Matthews.

"There appears to be a struggle that took place over the officer's gun," said Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad, adding that he stands behind the officer.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Police are hoping the dash camera from the squad car will offer more information.
