Person of interest in judge shooting charged in May 2015 murder

A man, named a person of interest in the shooting of a judge in Austin, is charged with murder in an unrelated case. Chimene Onyeri, 28, is charged in the death of Jacobi Demond Alexander, 31, whose body was found in the courtyard of a southwest Houston apartment complex on May 18.

Investigators determined Onyeri was one of two suspects in the shooting death of Alexander at the complex on Westbranch Drive near Bellaire Boulevard. The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force took Onyeri into custody on Monday on Bissonnet near South Dairy Ashford Road.

Houston Police Department homicide investigators say Alexander was walking through a common area of the apartment complex when he was approached by two unknown males, shot several times and later pronounced dead.

In social media postings on Monday night, the Austin Police Department said it was "aware of the arrest in Houston of a person of interest in the shooting" of state District Judge Julie Kocurek. The posting said "the arrest was for unrelated charges" and went on to say that it would make no further comments.

Kocurek was shot on Friday night upon returning to her home in a neighborhood near downtown Austin. Police in Austin said Kocurek was taken to hospital and is in stable condition with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
