UPDATE: 9/28/16 - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Arson Unit determined Wednesday that although there were general 'indicators' of an explosive device, there was not an actual explosive device inside of the package mailed to police headquarters.

This incident remains an ongoing investigation.

CMPD officers are monitoring who goes in and out of headquarters after the incident Tuesday night.

People are allowed to walk into the lot, but not drive in unless they're employees.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Headquarters was evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a bomb threat.

According to police, around 4:30 p.m. a suspicious package was identified at CMPD headquarters. Out of an abundance of caution police evacuated the building and requested the bomb squad to investigate.

CMPD Captain Mike Campagna said an alert employee spotted the suspicious package in the mail room. There was no phone call or written threat.

Officers said K9 Leonidas was called in to inspect the package and quickly "alerted" on it. Police said K9 Leonidas is trained to smell explosives.

According to CMPD Captain Campagna, the suspicious package was safely removed from CMPD Headquarters and will be rendered safe at a remote location. No word yet on what was inside the package. Police said it's a slow methodical process to figure out what's inside.

FOX 46 Charlotte was on scene for a scheduled news conference around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday with NAACP members, who had a list of demands for city leaders, when everyone was told to immediately evacuate the building.

Bomb Squad, as well as the Charlotte Fire Department, responded to the scene.

Shortly after the evacuation at CMPD Headquarters, a group of protesters arrived.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police blocked off a section of their parking lot Tuesday, and surrounding streets.

Everyone inside CMPD Headquarters was safely evacuated. No injuries were reported. Captain Campagna told FOX 46 Charlotte he cannot recall a situation like this ever happening before.
