Teen shot, killed day before his 18th birthday

Jahee Hoke's mom says they'd just moved to Charlotte a few months ago. She described him as a loving son and brother. A son she's heartbroken she was unable to see one last time.

Neighbors describe the chaos and noise escalated quickly.

"I just thought it was fire crackers going off. I heard a bunch of commotion, a bunch of kids yelling and screaming and i just thought it was just kids having fun," Dan Edniston said.

It wasn't fun they were having, it was reportedly a fight that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Jahee Hoke, one day before his 18th birthday.

"18 today, so it shook me," Edniston said.

CMPD responded to a call reporting teens fighting in the street. Detectives said at 6:23 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, they were called to a house in the 13500 block of Armour Ridge Drive.

When crews arrived they found Hoke shot. He died at the scene.

"What my wife told me was she seen some people running it was kids running everywhere taking cover," a neighbor said.

Dan Edniston has lived on Armour Ridge Drive for over 13 years and what he saw last night says will stay with him forever...

"It just doesn't happen here. I've been here since 2003, zero problems, everyone was in shocked," Edniston said.

One neighbor still visibly shaken tells said Hoke was by a Jetta when he was shot.

Neighbors said they believe the Jetta is Hoke's car. There's a bullet hole that goes straight through the passenger door.

"They said it was a fight that happened at school Wednesday and then the kids where in the neighborhood," a neighbor said.

The fight started at Olympic High School in Steele Creek, and then spilled into the neighborhood. Now parents in the area are they're thinking twice about letting their kids go out alone.

"Sometimes I let my daughter ride the bike from the house and sometimes to this street while I stand in my driveway. Obviously now I won't be able to do that now until we are able to figure out what actually happened," a neighbor said.

At this time, police said it appears that the suspect and Hoke knew each other.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.
