Thieves target Laveen martial arts studio

At the Tae Kwon Do studio, the classes continue but the owner, staff, and students are frustrated.

"When people would come to break in here, it's not for money because we don't have any, so they take little things," said Senior Master Landgren Lee.

The billing is done electronically, so the thieves went after equipment, including the bags belonging to the students where they kept their training gear, like nun-chucks.

"A full gear bag could cost them $350-400 to get everything that they need," said Lee.

Lee says the thieves got inside by throwing a rock through the front window.

"I think it is kids, and it is cool, it's cool stuff ro kids, it's not extremely valuable and I think that is why," he said.

They also took some fitness bags which can weigh as much as 40 pounds.

"We're using these things for striking and hitting, so if someone is going to rob these, they're not going to run very far, they are probably going to be going out to the car with them, but even then why would you steal them, it isn't something that has street value," said Lee.

The latest break-in is the third at their Laveen location near 35th Avenue and Baseline. Now they have a new alarm system which will hopefully keep everyone's gear and the business safe.

"They were just really hurt, and I think the ones that were hurt even more were the staff that work here because it's a violation, if you've ever had a robbery in your home, or your car, you feel violated. This is their home, and it was tough," he said.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Phoenix Police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
