JACKSONVILLE, FL - At a Vilano Beach neighborhood, police say the woman was caught in a stranger's home. Not just any woman though.. a mermaid!
Tonya Gerlach told authorities she was "playing mermaid" when she swam up to the property. According to police, Gerlach apparently admitted to going inside the house with keys she found outside. She didn't steal anything though -- she just hung around, reportedly rearranging furniture and even watered the plants.
The homeowner came back and was understandably surprised and a little confused, because Gerlach insisted that she worked in the house.
Gerlach was arrested for burglary, while neighbors say they've seen her before.
"It is a gated community. I don't know how she got in here."
"She just came into the house and was wandering around saying she works here, but we've never hired her."
"My neighbor says he has seen her on security cameras at his house next door around two in the morning."
"I kept asking who she worked for and why she was here.. nothing added up and my husband said to ask her to leave and to call the police."
Gerlach also claimed to have eluded some fisherman that were pursuing her. She was also charged with possession of a controlled substance in addition to the burglary, after police say they found some Xanax in her bag.
