Woman Jumps from Burning Home

A Temple mother and her daughter are in the hospital after their Basken Road home caught fire Wednesday.

Officer James Wheeler was one of the first on the scene. He said he went directly to the front of the house and could see a hand waving through black smoke in an upstairs window.

That woman was Jan Brown.

Wheeler convinced Brown to jump out of the window and he would catch her.

And he did.

Officer Wheeler and Lt. James Hollowood then pulled her to safety as flames engulfed the home.

Six family dogs died in the blaze and Brown broke her hip. Brown and her daughter were also both treated for smoke inhalation. Still, Brown said she knows it could have been much worse.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause, but they believe it was accidental.
