Wal-mart brawl: Suspects battle Cottonwood police officers

Arizona authorities are trying to identify several suspects after a late-night brawl in a Wal-Mart parking lot left one person dead and two others suffering from gunshot wounds, including a police officer who was shot in the leg.

The violence erupted late Saturday night when eight Cottonwood police officers were attacked as they tried to confront the suspects about a disturbance at the store.

One suspect was fatally shot, a second was shot in the abdomen and a Wal-Mart employee suffered a sprained arm and cuts. The wounded officer, Sgt. Jeremy Daniels, is expected to recover.
"They're doing well, but they're beat up pretty good.. this was an all out knockdown drag out battle.. pretty much for 10 to 15 minutes, it was everybody fighting for everything they had," said Police Chief Jody Fanning.

The video of the attack on the officer may not be released for some time, but Chief Fanning says it is stunning -- watching suspects attack police officers.

"Yes, I've never seen anything like this. I've been a police officer for 28 years.. I've never seen of it or heard of anything like this," he said.

From the outside of the store on Monday, it appeared that things at the Wal-mart are business as usual, but if you talk to some of the people in this town, they are still shaken up.

"Yeah, we're all concerned.  I've been talking to people all day.. a friend of mine found out what happened from someone in Kansas.. she calls and says, hey what's going on there?" said Jane Stewart.

Tom McCabe added, "We're really shocked, almost disbelief that something like this would happen in this peaceful hamlet."

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the eight people jailed or hospitalized following the incident aren't cooperating.

According to Graves, the incident began when an employee was shoved inside the store. Cottonwood police later found the suspects in the store's parking lot.

Graves said the people were living in an SUV with Idaho plates and might be related.
