Workers clean up after SUV smashes into restaurant

A big cleanup is underway at a valley restaurant after a Chevrolet Suburban came slamming into the building, injuring several people.

Now the dramatic 9-1-1 calls have been released from people inside the Oregano's Restaurant near 67th Ave. & Bell Road.

The investigation is still ongoing, but Glendale Police say the driver was wearing a walking boot over his right foot.

"I am at the Oregano's Pizza on 67th Avenue and Bell Road, and I just had a car run into the building, we need help here," said a caller.

The first calls came in around 6 p.m. Monday night. Witnesses told police they saw the driver of the white SUV pull into a handicapped spot in front of the restaurant, but the driver never stopped.

"Really all I saw was a big SUV, it just kept rolling into the restaurant and hit a woman," said a caller.

"So she was a pedestrian," said the operator.

"She was standing outside," said the caller.

According to Glendale Police, two women; one 30, and another 59, were seriously injured. The 59-year-old had major trauma to her legs.

Many people who were inside the restaurant called 9-1-1 and came out to help.

"We have a nurse here, and an EMT with her, but we need people here now," said a caller.

"How many people are involved," asked the operator.

"I see one woman on the floor, I don't know where the driver is right now, and I see one woman down over here," said the caller.

The 58-year-old driver was operating the SUV while wearing a walking boot on his right foot. Police are trying to determine if that was a factor in the crash, or if the driver was impaired in any way.

On Tuesday, the workers began patching up the gaping hole in the restaurant, which remains closed.

One of the victims is 59-year-old Terry Deignan, she is the office manager for DPR Realty in Peoria. Her co-workers say they are stunned, and they are pulling together to support her and her family.

They have set up a fund; you can donate at any Wells Fargo branch to help her family with medical bills.
