GOP legislative leaders plan quick push on budget proposal

PHOENIX (AP) - Republican leaders in the Legislature plan quick action on a budget deal hammered out with Gov. Doug Ducey.

Appropriations committees in the House and Senate plan hearings Thursday afternoon in what could be hours-long sessions.

Debate on the budget is expected Friday with the goal of passing the budget by Friday or Saturday.

Democrats are generally opposed to the proposal. The wild card is whether majority Republican leaders can convince enough of their members to support the plan.

House and Senate leaders announced an agreement on a $9.1 billion budget plan Wednesday that cuts more money from universities but gives more to K-12 schools than the governor initially proposed.
