Early and provisional ballots still being counted in Maricopa County

Nearly a week after Election Day, ballots in Maricopa County are still being counted.

At last check, there were about 45,000 early ballots left to count, along with 55,000 provisional ballots. While that may seem like a lot of ballots, Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell says on average, it takes 17 days to finish counting all the ballots -- and this year, they expect to beat that mark.

"We can only start counting so many days before the election, so we're trying to cram a lot of people into that narrow space and I don't think that they would want us to sacrifice accuracy for speed and that's what we're trying to do. We're trying to make sure that every vote that can be counted will be counted," stated Purcell.

Purcell says more than 200,000 people dropped off early ballots on Election Day. She also says more than one million people mailed in their early ballots -- that's higher than what we've seen in the past.

Purcell says all votes should be tabulated by the end of the week.
