Bernie Sanders' wife Jane talks immigration ahead of campaign rally

With the Arizona presidential preference election just over a week away, candidates are starting to focus on our state.

Donald Trump may hold a rally in Arizona on Saturday and Bernie Sanders is coming to the valley on Tuesday. His event begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Convention Center. The visit will be the second high-profile event the Sanders campaign has held in Phoenix.

On Monday, his wife, Jane Sanders was in the valley, telling immigration activists Bernie Sanders is on their side.

"It's a large Latino population. We feel we've done a lot of outreach and they are going to know him a little bit, so that's been the difficulty," she said.

Still, the Clinton campaign has criticized Sanders on immigration for opposing a 2007 immigration reform bill.

Ms. Sanders says her husband will fight for immigration reform and he plans to extend his free public university plan to undocumented students.

"It would affect them as anybody else.. if you have the desire to go for higher education, you would be able to attain that."

During her tour through the valley, Ms. Sanders stopped by Tent City and met Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is known for his tough stance on immigration.

What does Ms. Sanders make of Sheriff Arpaio support of Donald Trump?

"People are afraid and concerned that they are being left behind," she replied. "Bernie offers a positive vision that doesn't blame others.. it's that we need to re-prioritize the issues facing America."

Sanders also discussed recent protests, like the one at a Trump rally in Chicago.

"We've never recommended that protesters go to anybody's rallies.. we don't think people should be disruptive."

Sanders also says as First Lady, she would be like Eleanor Roosevelt and that we should expect to see her much more on the campaign trail, stumping for her husband.
