ROSCOE, Ill. (AP) - Police from Illinois and Arizona have arrested a 41-year-old man for a Phoenix homicide more than 24 years ago.

The Beloit Daily News reports ( ) Phoenix police and Winnebago County Sheriff's officers arrested Steven Michael Humelhans on Monday in the northern Illinois city of Roscoe, near the Wisconsin border. Humelhans was arrested on a first-degree murder warrant out of Maricopa County in Arizona for the 1988 death of 25-year-old Eric Rice.

Phoenix police say Humelhans was first charged in Rice's death in 1996 but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence. Police say a witness provided new evidence that was presented to a grand jury in March and Humelhans was indicted.

Humelhans is held at the Winnebago County jail in Rockford awaiting extradition to Arizona.
