Local School Council Votes to Turn Wendell Smith Elementary into a Charter School

Posted:

When a school closes in Chicago, parents are usually the ones who are upset.

But on Tuesday, a vote to close Wendell Smith Elementary School on the city's far South Side was actually prompted by parents.

Wendall Smith has been on probation for seven years in a row.

The school can accommodate 800 students, but it only had 350 students enrolled there this year.

So on Tuesday night, the local school council finally took action and decided to transform the school into a charter.

There's still a long way to go, however. Parents plan to hold a rally on Wednesday and start circulating a petition supporting the charter school plan. Then, the Local School Council will take that petition to the Chicago School Board this fall.
