Community Volunteers Promote School Attendance in Englewood

Not going to school is not an option and dozens of volunteers including the Fox Chicago team hit the pavement in Englewood to help get that message out.

Daniel S. Wentworth Elementary School Principal Dina Everage and teams of volunteers including Fox Chicago’s Robin Robinson went door-to-door, stressing the important of the first day of school.

Wentworth is a Track E school, similar to a year-round school schedule. The new term begins on Monday, August 8.

Fox Chicago’s Darlene Hill and Tisha Lewis along with community leaders, students, parents, WGCI’s Tony Sculfield and “Connie” handed out book bags and bundles of school supplies. The faculty and staff at Wentworth want students to know they are excited for them to come.

In spite of the rain, Thursday’s community outreach effort provided supplies and reading materials to more than forty families in that area.

“Rain or shine, we tell them to come rain or shine and we’re here too, waiting on them,” Everage said. “The first day of school is absolutely important; it sets a tone for the entire school year. Truancy troubles us and our attendance percentage went up slightly last year but we’re still at like 91 percent.”

The goal is to reach 100 percent on the first day of school and every day thereafter.

Fox Chicago’s Robin Robinson and Tisha Lewis are launching Sisters Peak Mentoring Program and its adopted Wentworth and will be working directly with female students to boost self-esteem and academic achievement.

The program kicks off in October.
