CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard Approved Without Contract

Posted:

Jean-Claude Brizard, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's choice for CEO of Chicago Public Schools, won formal approval Wednesday.

The Board of Education approved the nomination, though a spokeswoman confirmed she did not know what Brizard would be paid. She said negotiations were continuing on Brizard's employment contract.

CPS officials brushed off concerns about approving a contract they hadn't seen.

"It was very important that Jean-Claude was able to start right away---and that required that this board act on that appointment so he could begin to work officially in this capacity," said Terry Mazany, who the interim CPS CEO who Brizard replaced. "He's been putting in countless hours for the preceding weeks for that and they made that official."

Brizard has been working pro bono since he arrived in Chicago to get the lay of the land, but it remained unclear what would happen after his appointment was confirmed.

Brizard’s appointment has been mired in some controversy, after he received a vote of no confidence in his previous position as chief of Rochester, NY schools. Nevertheless, Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, said Brizard has struck her as a charming man and she is willing to give him a shot before passing judgment on the pick.

Wednesday's session will also be the final meeting for most board members; the mayor has  nominated replacements for them.
