Police: Man Breaks into Home, Molests Child

A man has been arrested after police say he allegedly broke into an apartment to molest a young girl Sunday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said shortly after 6 a.m., 21-year-old Ricardo Torres Marquez removed the screen from a window and entered an apartment on West McDowell Road and 72nd Avenue.

Thompson said that Marquez molested a 4-year-old girl in the apartment and then attempted to carry the girl out the front door.

Sleeping family members in other rooms, including her parents and grandmother, heard Marquez. They were able to detain him until police arrived, Thompson said.

The victim had several siblings in the same room, but it is not believed they were molested by Marquez, who was not known to the family, police said.

Marquez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail and charged with three counts of sexual conduct with a minor, one count of child molestation, one count of kidnapping and one count of burglary.

The child is okay, and the family is very shaken.

Marquez is being held without bond. Investigators believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
