Firefighter Accused of Hit-and-Run Reassigned

Phoenix Fire Engineer Mark Nehrenz was arrested over the weekend, accused of hitting a teenager on rollerblades with his vehicle and then leaving the scene.

And police believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Detectives are awaiting a blood toxicology report.

The Phoenix Fire Department told us Monday that Nehrenz, a 34-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative reassignment pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

According to police, 56-year-old Mark Nehrenz was off duty when he struck a teenager who was rollerblading in the street near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Saturday about 5 p.m. He then allegedly fled the scene.

A witness told FOX 10 a couple of other drivers stopped to help the victim. Another witness called 911, and trailed Nehrenz until police were able to pull him over, authorities say.

The victim suffered a broken hip and is recovering.

Nehrenz is being held on $10,000 bond, on charges of leaving the scene of an injury collision.
