Off-Duty Firefighter Accused in Hit-and-Run Crash

A Phoenix firefighter has been booked into jail on charges that he left the scene of an injury collision -- and police think he may have been drinking prior to the crash.

According to police, 56-year-old Mark Nehrenz was off duty when he struck a teenager who was rollerblading in the street near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Saturday about 5 p.m. He then allegedly fled the scene.

A witness told FOX 10 a couple of other drivers stopped to help the victim. Another witness called 911, and trailed Nehrenz until police were able to pull him over, authorities say.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash, and are waiting for blood tests to determine if he was legally drunk at the time.

The victim suffered a broken hip and is recovering.

Nehrenz is being held on $10,000 bond.

We contacted the Phoenix Fire Department, who told us that this is a personnel matter. They had no additional comment.
