A 4-year-old boy has died as a result of massive head trauma and extensive bruising -- and Mesa Police say he was abused by his mother's boyfriend.
The 4-year-old child was rushed to the hospital on Friday afternoon after the boy's mother came home and found him unresponsive.
The child had been in the care of the woman's boyfriend, 23-year-old Jorge Busso, while she was at work.
Busso was detained and questioned. According to Mesa Police, Busso said he smelled a foul odor on the child and realized he had soiled himself. As punishment, the child was pushed into a corner and Busso allegedly struck him with a belt.
Busso told detectives that when he was trying to hold the child still, the boy hit his head on the wall.
Mesa Detective Steve Berry says the child may have been in this condition for up to two hours, without receiving any medical care, while Busso and the child were home alone.
When the boy's mother got home, she took him to Banner Baywood Hospital where he was then airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Doctors had to remove a portion of his skull to relieve the pressure on his brain. Hospital staff thought that he would not survive.
By Sunday night, the child passed away.
Busso was charged with child abuse, false reporting and first degree murder. He is in the country illegally.
Another child, a 6-year-old, was placed in child protective custody.
