Tempe Police Make Arrests in Zachary Marco's Murder

It was a senseless murder that shocked the ASU community. Tempe Police are announcing arrests made in the killing of 21-year-old student Zachary Marco.

Marco was gunned down and mugged Sunday, October 17, just a few blocks away from campus while walking home from the library. When Marco was found on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound, he was missing a bag containing his laptop computer and iPod. He later died at a nearby hospital.

Louis Eugene Harper, 20, and Marion Anthony Patterson III, 17, have been arrested and are facing first degree murder and armed robbery charges. Detectives say that Harper was the gunman.

Police had few leads to go on, until Marco's computer bag was found. Probable cause for the arrest was developed when both suspects' fingerprints were found on the contents of computer bag. Police say they also found text messages between the two planning future robberies.

Both men have gang ties, and Harper has an extensive criminal history.

Marco's father, a defense attorney, made a public plea for the shooting suspect's accomplice to come forward to turn in the shooter. At the time he said he would do whatever he could to lessen the accomplice's sentence and provide defense in exchange for that information.

But since neither of the suspects' took advantage of the bargain, Marco says he will work even harder to see they are punished to the full extent of the law.

"My son's life was taken for nothing. They don't even have the stuff anymore. If it were a wound, it would be a wound that would never heal. And it's raw… as I stand here today, I don't see it ever healing… I don't believe there will ever be closure," said Daniel Marco during the press conference. "But what I'm working on personally is figuring out how to weave my son into my life."

Marco was studying political science and wanted to become a lawyer. Marco's father has started a scholarship foundation in his name.

It's been nearly a month since the killing. Wednesday evening, family and community members will hold a vigil for Marco. It is from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Main Court Courtyard of Barrett Honors College, located at the corner of Rural and Apache.
