Phoenix Teacher's Aide Accused of Child Molestation

Posted:

A 70-year-old teacher's aide at a Phoenix school has been accused of molesting an 11-year-old special needs child.

It happened on July 6, aboard a special needs bus. The school bus driver noticed some strange behavior and called Phoenix Police. She said her bus assistant touched an 11-year-old female student inappropriately.

Detectives from the Family Investigations Bureau Child Crimes Unit pulled video surveillance from inside the bus.

The video allegedly revealed 70-year-old Andres Mendoza fondling the victim's breasts both over and under her clothing -- and reaching into the victim's pants.

Court documents also reveal that Mendoza forced the victim's hand into his own lap several times.

The report reads: "As her hand is on his lap, Andres appears to become short of breath, grimaces, shifts in his seat and leans over and says things in her ear."

The 11-year-old girl told forensic detectives this was not the first time and that it had been happening for a while. Other children were on the bus at the same time.

Police say the suspect admitted to touching the victim, but said he was "just playing around." He later requested an attorney.

Mendoza was booked into jail on 30 counts of child molestation and 6 counts of sexual conduct with a minor. He remains in-custody without bond.

Mendoza worked for Washington School District. The Washington school district told us they're aware of investigation -- but they haven't said whether or not Mendoza has been placed on leave.

The victim attended Ironwood Elementary.

Mendoza lives in Phoenix with his wife of 18 years.
