Attorneys for an Ajo man accused of murdering a 7-year-old girl have asked a Tucson judge for an evaluation that will determine if he's competent to stand trial.
Loretto "Kyle" Alegria is accused of fatally beating and stabbing Rhia Almeida in June 2009 when she came to his house to visit his little brother.
Prosecutors agreed in February to take the death penalty off the table if Alegria would plead guilty to first-degree murder.
Authorities say the 21-year-old Alegria refused, saying he deserved to die.
Public defenders seek to have doctors determine whether Alegria understands the nature of the proceedings and can assist in his own defense.
