Death Penalty Deliberations in Phoenix Police Officer's Death

A Maricopa County Superior Court jury has found four aggravating circumstances against a man who admitted shooting and killing a Phoenix police officer.

The jury now moves to the death penalty phase against 23-year-old Edward James Rose.

After hearing from the defense, the jury will then decide the sentence, either life or the death penalty.

Rose has already pleaded guilty in the 2007 shooting death of a Phoenix police officer George Cortez Jr.

Police say Rose's girlfriend distracted Cortez as the officer was trying to arrest Rose for trying to cash a forged check on July 27, 2007.

Authorities say that gave Rose the opportunity to shoot the 23-year-old officer. The shooting was captured on a check cashing store's surveillance video.
