Sgt. Drenth Death: Both Suicide, Homicide Possible

Posted:

New information was released Friday about the mysterious shooting death of Phoenix Police Sgt. Sean Drenth.

Drenth was found dead next to his patrol car in downtown Phoenix back in October by state capitol police.

Some have speculated his death was a murder made to look like a suicide or a suicide made to look like a murder.

No one has ever been arrested.

During Friday's news conference, police said:

  • Drenth had a gunshot wound under his chin and a shotgun wound on his chest.
  • His duty gun was found yards away from his patrol car near some railroad tracks. A third service weapon which was fired once was found near his body.
  • Investigators say there were signs of a struggle, but there were also signs pointing to Drenth taking his own life.
  • The computer in Drenth's patrol car showed he had activated a stopped subject screen at 10:26 and parked his car.
  • Investigators believe someone was at the scene either just before, during or after his death.

"Somebody was in that scene between 10:26 and 10:50, that 24 minute period," says lead investigator Lt. Joe Knott

Sgt. Drenth's family believes he did not take his own life.

"Absolutely nobody believes that Sean Drenth would've killed himself for any reason," says Lt. Knott. "We have no information to substantiate that Sean was in the mindset to take his life that night."

At the time, Sgt. Drenth was facing scrutiny for alleged time sheet fraud -- but authorities say he did not know how serious the Attorney General's Office investigation was.

"We have checked and looked and reviewed and found no information that he knew what was coming in terms of that AG's investigation."

Several other current and former officers were indicted in the same investigation. Had he lived, authorities say, Drenth would've been indicted as well.
