Mesa Doctor Rearrested after More Victims Come Forward

Posted:

A Mesa doctor who was originally arrested two weeks ago on accusations of sexual abuse has been re-arrested. Six additional victims have come forward against Dr. Gabriel Ogbonnaya.

In addition to the 2 counts of sexual abuse, he's facing an additional 8 counts of sexual abuse and 2 counts of sexual assault.

Dr. Ogbonnaya was originally arrested on June 9 at his Mesa office. Two adult female victims told police they had each gone to Ogbonnaya, an internal medicine doctor, for general medical services at his Mesa office.

They were shown to treatment rooms. In the treatment room, one victim reported that Ogbonnaya "placed his forehead against hers and began rubbing her neck and the top of her breasts." Police say he then moved his hands lower, told the victim she "needs to have more sex" and over her clothing, tapped her private area.

The second victim reported the same thing. Both patients were visiting the doctor for a reason that in no way required a breast or vaginal exam.

Police say the two women didn't know each other and each incident happened months apart.

After media reports came out about his arrest, six more victims came forward with incidents of abuse.

Police say each victim experienced similar events and have no relationship with each other.

County prosecutors did not charge Dr. Ogbonnaya after he was first arrested, so he had been released. As the investigation developed, detectives were able to build a bigger case and officers re-arrested him Friday. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office was "fully aware" that Ogbonnaya would be re-arrested, according to Mesa Police.

But the arrest was a little shaky. When detectives arrived at his office, he had locked himself inside a room and staff members refused to unlock the lobby doors to allow officers in. After several minutes of negotiation, he surrendered and was taken into custody.

Ogbonnaya was booked for two counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual abuse. Five additional counts were added to his original arrest case.
