    BIG HEAT WAVE BEGINS!
    BIG HEAT WAVE BEGINS!
ATLANTA, Ga. -
HEAT WAVE BEGINS TODAY....

As a strengthening ridge of high pressure takes over from the west over the next few days, the daily thunderstorm threat will diminish, and temperatures will climb to some of the hottest levels we've seen for 2014. For today, the chance of a stray afternoon thunderstorm is a mere 20%. However, any thunderstorm will have the potential to bring frequent lightning and could get to severe levels due to strong winds. We'll be monitoring that threat most closely during the hours of noon-9pm. After starting out the day with a few patches of morning fog, it will be a mostly sunny, humid, and sizzling day with highs in the low to mid 90s and the heat index pushing close to 100 degrees. The heat will build a little more for Thursday and Friday. With a predicted high temperature Thursday of 96 and 97 on Friday, that will exceed the hottest day we've already had this summer of 95 on August 7th.

Very low afternoon thunderstorm chances and very hot and humid weather will remain in place through the weekend. Each day will start out muggy with lows in the low to mid 70s. Afternoon highs will be 94 or higher through Sunday. Temperatures may trend down a couple of degrees early next week, but will still be seasonably hot (near 90).

IN THE TROPICS….

We are monitoring two areas of potential tropical development in the Atlantic Ocean. A cluster of thunderstorms that will move westward towards the Lesser Antilles and the Caribbean shows the highest probability of development within the next 5 days (50%). Computer models vary greatly on the path of this system. At this time, interests in the Caribbean will need to watch this closely. A second area of thunderstorms behind this shows a much lower chance of organizing into a tropical system. But you can track both areas of interest anytime at www.myfoxhurricane.com
