Family talks to FOX 10 about their tragic loss

Posted: Updated:

It was an 8th grade graduation that ended with a murder in the parking lot of the school.  The shooting stunned everyone.

Her daughters and sister describe Takesha as loving and caring, a woman trying to get away from an abusive relationship -- and say what happened to her should serve as a warning to all women.

On Sunday, a car wash was held on 107th Avenue near Indian School Road -- a way to come together and remember a woman loved by so many.

"When I came out and seen all the signs and posters and pictures and all that I kind of lost it," said Lameka Barnes, Takesha's daughter.

Lameka says her mother would do anything to keep her, her sister and brother safe.

On Friday, Barnes and her family were in Avondale, attending her younger daughter's graduation from junior high when she was shot to death.

"It was all so quick and so fast."

"I ran on the passenger side of the door to try to resuscitate her and it was just crazy," said Britton Bellamy, Takesha's sister.

Bellamy says Barnes asked to talk to her after the ceremony about the relationship she was in with 38-year-old Thomas Moton.  He was arrested the next day on first-degree murder charges.

According to police, the couple had a history of domestic violence.

"If you're in an abusive relationship, get out of it.  Don't waste a second, get out," said Bellamy.

Bellamy shares the words she is certain her sister would have spoken if she could -- advice she and Lameka hope will prevent others from the same fate Barnes suffered.

The victim and the suspect had two children together.  The daughter who graduated on Friday was not Moton's daughter, but Barnes' family says she was worried he would show up anyway.

They'll be holding a car wash in the same location all week to raise money for funeral expenses.
