Police: Woman shot, killed by boyfriend

PHOENIX - Authorities say a Phoenix woman has been fatally shot and her common-law husband is in custody.

Phoenix police say 33-year-old Carlos Tino Villareal has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Officers responded to a shooting call at a west Phoenix apartment complex about noon Tuesday and found 32-year-old Christina Alvarez wounded.

Villareal told police it was an accident that occurred while the two were in a bedroom. The couple's three children were in another room of the apartment at the time.

Alvarez was transported to a Phoenix hospital, where she later died from injuries.

Police say Villareal was detained for questioning and detectives learned Alvarez was shot after she and Villareal got into an argument.

Villareal told detectives that Alvarez was upset with him about his behavior while using meth and the fact he kept a handgun in the house they share with the children.

"Christina also wanted Carlos to turn himself in to the police for the murder Carlos committed of his cousin which took place at the Gila River Indian Reservation in 2001," the police report adds.

Villareal told police he retrieved a handgun from the closet and pulled the trigger -- thinking it was not loaded.

He then ran outside and yelled for neighbors to call 911.

According to court documents, Villareal attempted to choke himself in the police interview room with a cloth cord from his shorts.

There is a history of domestic violence between the couple.
