Campaign ad shows AZ Senator cocking gun, shooting up Obamacare

Posted: Updated:

A Republican state senator running for Congress is making headlines for shooting up a copy of the federal health care law in his new campaign ad.

We spoke to Arizona State Senator Ron Gould about it via Skype.

Congressional candidate Ron Gould debuted a new campaign ad Thursday. In it he lashed out at the Washington establishment, and literally unloaded on the federal health care bill.

Ad: "This is what I'd do to that law [cocks gun]. I'm Ron Gould and I approved this message -- because Washington needs a straight shooter."

Over Skype, Gould told us, "Washington doesn't get Arizona, and that we don't want government healthcare. We don't need it, we just don't want it."

But some are criticizing the ad's use of a gun, including Democratic Congressional candidate Kyrsten Sinema, who worked with Gould for years at the Arizona State Capitol.

"Well I think if it had been a commercial about the 2nd Amendment, about gun rights, it would have been appropriate to have a gun in there. But this was a commercial that was talking about the health care law -- and so shooting a stack of paper that represents the health care law doesn't seem to make any sense, first of all."

But Gould is defending the new ad.

"You know it really has no relevance to the Gifford's tragedy -- the bad guys didn't lay their guns down after Gabby Giffords was shot. So it's rather ridiculous that somehow now guns are off limits because we had a congresswoman shot in Arizona."

We'd like to know what you think. Do you feel the ad is acceptable or offensive?
