Voyage Trekkers: Written and produced in Arizona

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the hottest shows -- not on television, but on the web and it's written, produced and shot right here in Arizona and it's called "Voyage Trekkers."

"We watch shows like 'Star Trek' and they are about the best ship in the galaxy and this is about the very worst, so if there's thousands of starships out there, this is about the worst," said Nathan Blackwell, the writer and director of "Voyage Trekkers."

Web shows are gaining more popularity, letting creative minds like Blackwell's live out their dream.

"It's kind of a new medium to kind of express yourself and get the work out there," he said.

The success behind the web series is that you can still get an entertaining product without spending a lot of money.

"Because we are so low budget, we kind of beg, borrow and steal.  Everyone is a volunteer, no one gets paid," said Blackwell.

Gabrielle Van Buren plays one of the main characters on the show, Dr. Rena.

"It's entertaining, light hearted, it's a good time and we're hoping it continues to be successful," she said.

You have to know what works for the web.  While popular TV shows are 30 minutes or an hour, a typical web show is about three minutes.

"Voyage Trekkers" is getting ready to shoot season two after a popular first season.

"The great thing about web series is that you can build an audience and they come back every week and it connects with your fan base," said Blackwell.
