Phoenix couple sentenced in adult abuse case

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix couple has been sentenced in the abuse and torture of a mentally disabled man who later died.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman says Carlena Pinkerton and Joshua Pinkerton received a 13-year and 7-year prison sentence, respectively.

Both will also be on lifetime probation.

Carlena Pinkerton pleaded guilty in May to second-degree murder and vulnerable adult abuse. Joshua Pinkerton pleaded guilty to manslaughter and vulnerable adult abuse.

The couple was arrested in 2012 in the death of Carlena Pinkerton's brother, 22-year-old James Roy Moore.

Phoenix police say Moore had multiple injuries and died at a hospital a day after the Pinkertons left him there.

Authorities say a dehydrated and malnourished Moore was kept for long periods in a 2-by-4-foot room containing only a water heater and a drain.
