PHOENIX -

A federal prison guard in north Phoenix was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexually abusing two female inmates.

48-year-old Joe Martinez was indicted on 13-counts by a federal grand jury -- five counts of aggravated sexual abuse and eight counts of sexual abuse of a ward.

He's a former employee of the Federal Bureau of Prisons Correction Facility in north Phoenix, located just off the I-17.

Martinez is accused of sexually abusing two inmates he had control over in 2008 and 2010.

If convicted, he could face life in prison.
