ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Dozens of homeowners living in the Mac Groveland neighborhood packed St. Paul City Hall tonight, wearing yellow arm bands as a sign of protest.

Residents are upset about a developer's plan to build a five story, 20 unit apartment building at the corner of Grand Ave. and S. Finn St.

Neighbors say it looks more like a dorm than an apartment building, and they don't like the idea of another 80 students moving in next door.

Tonight, during a tension filled public hearing, the developers basically called the neighbors selfish.

The council voted in favor of the developer, dismissing the neighbors' appeal and moving the project forward.

While neighbors lost the apartment battle, they still have another fight on their hands.

They're asking the St. Paul City Council to consider an ordinance limiting student rentals near the St. Thomas University campus.

It would require a 150 foot buffer – basically three city blocks – between any new student housing.

Existing student housing would not be affected.

The idea would be to stop single family homes from being converted into rentals.

The ordinance is expected to go up to vote next week.
