Suspect with misdemeanor warrants flees from police

Posted: Updated:

A high speed police chase came to an end in the middle of a south Phoenix neighborhood, putting the people who live there on lock down for several hours while officers tried to find the suspect.

This chase started in Gilbert on the loop 202 near Cooper. And the suspect made it all the way to 31st Avenue and Baseline.

Police say that guy on the run ran into his own house. The SWAT team surrounded it, ready to kick the door down.

But when police went in, they didn't find him inside.

"I wanted to come over here and maybe try to talk him out of the house," said Robert McClelland, the suspect's brother.

McClelland says his younger brother, 23-year-old Joshua McClelland, is the suspect police are searching for.

Officers say McClelland had some misdemeanor traffic warrants and that's why he may have run when Gila River police first tried to pull him over. Police say McClelland was driving more than 100 miles an hour before he pulled off the freeway and ran into his south Phoenix house.

After a few minutes, the SWAT team kicked the door down. They went inside but came out empty handed.

Police say somehow McClelland managed to get out of the house. He's still on the run. His family is worried about his safety.

"He was working and maybe speeding they tried to pull him over and he ran scared. I'm not trying to excuse what he did, but I'm sure he's scared," says Robert McClelland.

Police say they don't believe McClelland is dangerous. He's now facing felony flight charges, if caught.

"It was stupid to run, a couple days in jail versus who knows, know it ain't worth it."

McClelland lives inside the house with his girlfriend and new baby. His family is just hoping he'll turn himself in.
