Head-on, 3-vehicle crash injures 7 near Blaine

BLAINE, Minn. (KMSP) -

At least one victim of a serious crash near Blaine had to be flown away by emergency helicopter on Thursday.

A dramatic rescue followed the three-vehicle crash, and crews had to cut one woman out of her car before rushing her to the hospital.

SKY FOX 9 captured footage of the crash response, where crews surrounded the woman who was trapped inside her car. After cutting her free by removing the top of her car, paramedics raced to a nearby helicopter.

"It was a horrible thing," said Diane Chambers, who told FOX 9 News she held her breath and hoped for the best after witnessing the aftermath of the crash. "It broke my heart. I saw the lady crying, and the car was so smashed up. She was out the window, trying to breathe."

Blaine police say the driver of the Mercury Cougar was heading south on Radisson Road Northeast near Tournament Players Parkway when she crossed the center median and smashed head-on into a Nissan SUV before a second SUV plowed into the first. A total of seven people were hurt, including two juveniles.

"Preliminary information is that speeds were a factor," said Blaine Police Chief Chris Olson.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Police say the drivers of the SUVs were wearing their seat belts, but it is unclear whether the driver of the car or her passengers did.

The scene startled neighbors, many of whom rushed out of their homes while waiting for their loved ones to return.

The identities of those involved and the extent of their injuries was not released by Thursday night.
