2 sentenced for roles in Paradise Valley deaths

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX - Two people arrested for their alleged roles in the robbery and deaths of a Paradise Valley couple have been sentenced in the case.

Brittany Beinhauer had pleaded guilty to one count of credit card theft in an agreement with prosecutors. She was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison.

Beinhauer was Michael Crane's girlfriend. She had Bruce Gaudet's wallet. Gaudet was killed before the Shapiros in a similar home robbery.

"He was very controlling and she was very subservient he did not tell her about the things that he was doing," said Beinhauer's defense attorney Reginald Cooke.

Beinhauer's attorney told the judge she is struggling with a meth addiction. She says she wants to move out of state when she is done serving her 2-year sentence.

Fellow Phoenix resident Katherine Austin was given three years in prison for hindering prosecution. Prosecutors say that Austin threw out the Shapiros' suitcases to protect Michael Crane.

"It may seem like a little thing hey I helped get rid of some suitcases, but the murders in this case were horrendous. It was all over the news. She not only didn't come forward, she took efforts to get rid of evidence that could have helped us find the murderer sooner," said prosecutor Suzanne Cohen.

Both appeared before Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Warren Granville.

The women were among more than a handful of people charged in the case.

Authorities say Lawrence and Glenna Shapiro were fatally shot in January during a home invasion. The bodies of the well-to-do philanthropists, who were in their 70s, were found tied up and burned beyond recognition in their home.

Michael Crane is on trail for the murders of the Shapiros and Bruce Gaudet.
